What changed with VMware
Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in late 2023 and quickly reshaped how VMware is sold: perpetual licenses ended, products were bundled into subscriptions, and partner programs changed. For a small business running two or three hosts, renewal quotes have often gone up sharply, sometimes for features nobody uses.
The good news: if you own Windows Server licenses, you likely already own a capable hypervisor. Hyper-V in Windows Server 2025 handles the workloads most small and mid-sized companies run, and it ties straight into Azure for backup, disaster recovery and hybrid management.
Your options, honestly compared
- Hyper-V on your existing hardware: often the lowest-cost path when your servers have life left in them.
- Hyper-V failover cluster: high availability for businesses that can't tolerate a single host failing.
- Azure Local or Azure virtual machines: for companies ready to get out of the hardware business altogether.
- Stay on VMware: sometimes the numbers or an application vendor say stay. We'll support it properly and plan the exit for later.
How a migration runs
We inventory every virtual machine, its dependencies and its licensing, build the new hosts alongside the old ones, convert and test each VM, then cut over in planned windows with the original left intact as a rollback. Backups are verified before and after every move.
